Kenyan Markets sell stones to satisfy pregnancy craving

Kenyan Markets sell stones to satisfy pregnancy craving
One thing you won't see in the market right next to the fruits and fish is stones being sold for eating purposes. However, Kenyan markets sell soft stones known as "odowa" to satisfy pregnancy cravings.

The reason behind this is that in Kenya pregnant women crave and eat these soft stones which are sold for just over ten dollars for a hundred-kilo sack. But why stones? Some blame a cultural trend passed down through generation. But, doctors say craving stones or soil, known as pica, may be a sign of a vital mineral deficiency, like calcium or iron. One obstetrician says the habit can be hazardous for women, causing parasitic infestations, intestinal complications, anemia and malnourishment. So the next time the craving hits, it's better to just stick to fruits and vegetables instead.
